Meet a Chair Every Day

The inspiration for the Spanish Chair came from one of Børge Mogensen's travels. In 1958, Mogensen visited Spain, where the traditional chairs of Andalusia caught his attention. These chairs featured wide armrests, spacious seats, and ornate decorative carvings, commonly seen in regions influenced by Islamic culture.

Fascinated by these traditional Spanish chairs, Mogensen returned to Denmark and quickly began designing what would become the Spanish Chair.

The Legendary Craftsman Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen is one of the "Big Four" masters of Danish design and one of the most influential designers shaping modern Danish design.

In 1958, Mogensen traveled to Spain with his family. While in Andalusia, he fell in love with an old chair that had a wide seat and broad armrests. Upon returning to Denmark, he created the Spanish Chair.

The chair that captivated him was a traditional type found in regions influenced by ancient Islamic culture, from Spain to northern India. Mogensen modernized the design, stripping away the intricate carvings, and applied his trademark geometric precision to create his own version. However, he kept the most important feature: the broad armrests that gave the chair its unique character. These wide armrests could also be used to place a cup or glass—practically Danish "ergonomics."

Mogensen advocated for visual tranquility, simple lines, sturdy construction, and natural materials, all of which brought additional beauty and longevity to his designs. These principles reflected his belief that good furniture should be cherished by both current and future generations.

 Timeless Classic You Can’t Miss

Mogensen first simplified the structure of the chair using modern design principles. He removed the ornate and intricate decorative elements of the traditional chairs, replacing them with smooth, clean lines. However, he retained the chair's wide seat and distinctive broad armrests. These flat, wide armrests not only make a striking visual impression but also serve as small tables, ideal for placing cups, books, glasses, and other items, making them highly practical.

On September 19, 1958, Mogensen unveiled his newly designed Spanish Chair at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition on innovative living spaces. In the exhibition, all tables were removed, and the Spanish Chair was used both as seating and as a table, creating a more open and flexible space.

Following the Spanish Chair, Mogensen expanded the design in 1964 to create the Spanish Dining Chair, with both armrest and armless versions, adapting it to a wider range of uses.

A Sense of Tranquility and Simple Aesthetics

Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was a pioneering figure in modern Danish design and the original designer for Fredericia Furniture. His influence helped shape the landscape of contemporary Danish aesthetics. He drew inspiration from around the world, creating everyday objects meant to be passed down through generations, believing that furniture should evoke a sense of tranquility and feature a simple appearance. He was widely celebrated for his mastery of materials and proportions, with his designs exhibited in leading design museums across the globe.

The iconic Spanish Chair is one of Mogensen's outstanding contributions to modern design, created in 1958 for Fredericia Furniture. Combining solid oak or walnut with the highest quality saddle leather, the chair exudes a strong presence that only becomes more beautiful with time.

The Centerpiece of the Home

Inspired by the commonly found calfskin chairs of Spain, the Spanish Chair features a backrest and seat made from a single piece of saddle leather, supported by sturdy oak, with adjustable straps underneath for tension. The more the chair is used, the better the leather conforms to the sitter's body, offering customized ergonomic support.

The Spanish Chair's design is masculine and bold, with clean lines and warm wooden tones. The full leather covering gives the chair a rustic charm, making it a robust piece that doesn't require delicate care. It can be easily moved and used in any setting, making it a versatile and practical choice for any home.
